Our Story
Farmer-Founded, Family-Driven Expertise in Cover Crops
Before they were business partners, Bill Frederick and James Holz were 4-H buddies and classmates growing up in Greene County, Iowa, near Jefferson.
In 2014, they founded Iowa Cover Crop (ICC) as a way to help a few neighbors and diversify their family farm operations. ICC now has a growing dealer network and offers seed and application services throughout Iowa and the Midwest.
Combined, Bill and James have 20 years of experience growing cover crops. They have personally seeded rye grain, rye grass, oats, spring and winter wheat, peas, hairy vetch, common vetch, rapeseed, forage kale, crimson clover, radish, and turnips on their own family farms. Through this diverse first-hand experience, ICC provides personalized farmer to farmer advice to customers.
When they aren’t selling cover crops, Bill and James can be found raising row crops, cattle, small grains, and kids on their respective family farms in Greene County.

Bill Frederick

Bill Frederick is a seasoned farmer and co-founder of Iowa Cover Crop, with over 20 years of firsthand experience growing diverse cover crops on his family farm in Greene County, Iowa. He manages a cow-calf operation and grain farming, focusing on sustainable land practices, and brings practical, farmer-to-farmer insight to every project.
James Holz

James Holz is a dedicated farmer and ICC co-founder, with more than 20 years of experience cultivating cover crops and managing land in Greene County, Iowa. He specializes in growing forage crops and working closely with landowners and farmers to improve soil health and productivity through practical, cost-effective solutions.
Melissa Frederick
Accounting & Quality Control
Melissa Frederick is a dedicated mom of three young girls and a passionate farmer’s wife. With a background in biology, she initially worked in quality control before choosing to focus on raising her children and supporting the family farm in Greene County, Iowa. Melissa plays a vital role in Iowa Cover Crop, handling bookkeeping and quality control, drawing on her expertise to help ensure the business’s success.
Megan Holz
Accounting & Marketing
Megan Holz is a dedicated and versatile supporter behind the scenes at Iowa Cover Crop. She has played an essential role in the business for over a decade, juggling accounting, marketing, and day-to-day operations. Megan’s attention to detail, strong work ethic, and ability to handle multiple tasks at once help keep ICC running smoothly, all while managing her busy family life as a mother of three.
Josh Campbell
Operations Manager
Josh is instrumental in organizing the day-to-day flow of our warehouse, strategically planning for the upcoming season, building strong relationships with dealers and customers, and so much more.
Trevor Ross
Warehouse Manager
Trevor is the man that gets the seed in an out and all around. He is in charge of shipping, receiving, blend execution, and whatever else the day throws at him. As employee number one, he has seen it all, and he continues to grow with us.

Call us old fashioned, but we don’t sell online yet. You can place an order by visiting our office, calling us at 515.386.2427 or emailing orders@iacovercrop.com.
We like to say, anything BUT corn or soybeans. Our focus has been cover crops, but we also have:

We are glad you planted that small grain! We have strategically built our network of small grain growers and generally do not purchase grain on the spot in season; rather, small grains are contracted before planting and require us to deliver seed stock to ensure the varieties planted follow applicable seed law.

Next year, don’t forget they are on all bags and totes. Bulk tags are emailed or delivered to you with your invoice.
